In this work, we demonstrate the possibility to characterize on a single-shot basis the synchronization between a seeded free-electron laser (FERMI@Elettra) and an infrared pulse with a resolution down to one atomic unit of time (24 as). Our novel technique is based on the measurements of sidebands created by multi-infrared photon transitions in combination with a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer. The correlation plot of the single-shot sideband intensity (shown in panel a) allows one to reorder all measurements according to their relative synchronization and observe the oscillations of the sideband intensities as a function of the relative phase between the two field (panel b).

As a first application of the novel timing tool, we present experimental data showing the coherent control of the two-color photoionization process, showing the control of the emission of the photoelectron wavepacket with a resolution of only a few attoseconds. The results will pave the way towards attosecond coherent control experiments exploiting the shaping capabilities demonstrated at seeded free electron lasers.
